CHAIRMAN GRANT COMMENTS ON REUNION 2002 |
I wish I knew the answer to that. But one thing I do know, unlike our 10th or even our 25th, the renewal of friendships is not about how successful we are, how good we play golf or tennis, how bright our children are, how much money we have, how good we look, nor anything else that's in the present. It's all about the fun we had between 1953 and 1957. It's about memories, sweet memories.
Our minds do great things about the past. Our memories center on the good times. Sure we can remember some embarrassments, but we remember them as good natured humor today.
If you didn't have a good time or two in high school, stay home. But if you can remember just one good time, come to the fiftieth and we all will promise to refill your good times memory bank 100 times over. See you at the next one.

HIGHLIGHTS OF REUNION 2002
DENNIS DINAN, BHHS57 --September 30, 2002
We were promised, you’ll recall, a band of scary-looking
bastards in dreadlocks. Plus a raffish
saloon with waitresses, forearms like Tugboat Annie’s,
who replenish drinks without being asked. The same saloon, like
Donald Westlake’s favorite, to feature a pair
of doors decorated with silhouettes of dogs
and marked with the words POINTERS and SETTERS.
Not a bit of it. But here’s the way it was, 45 years on.
The Good Works
By the Ogurs, Bob and Ann, who twice allowed
the scalawags into their home (what God would’ve
done if He’d had the money). And the Treadways,
Bob and Mary Alice, who welcomed the little rascals into their 19th-century
charmer. And Chairman Grant, who masterminded the mischief and delivered
the most polished, heartfelt and longest—reunion speech in recorded
history. And Donaldson, who paid for it all (with our money). And
Jechura, who recorded countless hours of La Dolce
Vita. And Edwards, who planted the idea in
cyberspace. And Kasameyer, who emerged chipper and dapper
from the void.
The Winners
Cheater Grant, a fifth of 21-year-old single
malt. And Jones, a bottle of sarsaparilla
for correctly identifying the eighth-grade smoocher, Adele
Coneybear,
The Best Memory
Mr. Velkoff, whom some had the courage to call
Stephen.
The Most Intense Nostalgia
Miller, who discovered the remains of his family
cottage near Sleeping Bear Dunes.
The Most Ubiquitous Mystery Guest
Teddy MacManus ’60(?), Traverse City saloonkeeper.
And then it was done. The 50th?
Talk to Davis, the boss of it. / Dennis

RICHARD EDWARDS, BHHS57 --September 27, 2002
As I write to you today the forty-fifth anniversary reunion of Bloomfield Hills High School 1957 is now entered into our alumni book as history.
To those who for whatever reason discovered you would be unable to attend the event you were missed by everyone of us who did attend. First of all it was a grand and wonderful weekend where old friendships were rekindled and memories of our high school days were recalled by everyone.
Memories of every member of the class were brought to mind as the weekend progressed from the first day on Friday evening there was a social hour at Treadway's summer vacation retreat on West Bay followed by a dinner at the Old Mission Tavern several miles north of there up Highway 37. Like as if that was not enough for one evening.....most of the gang were not ready to call it a night and we ended with a nightcap at the Peninsula Grill and Bar.
Several of the group car-pooled the trip and I enjoyed the ride over to the event with Harry and Betsy Durbin. Everyone made it back to Traverse City that evening safe and sound ! --a trip of only thirteen miles, one way.
While the classmates made their own weekend accommodations , many --about twenty-five of us stayed at the Bayshore Resort right on Grand Traverse Bay which for the most part was perfect aside from a few wants that the resort did not provide --laundry-out service
Saturday we had free time to enjoy the Traverse area. There were many who set out for tee-off at their favorite golf course. While it threatened to rain everyone finished their round of golf. Others went their separate way to visit the Sleeping Bear National Dunes and the nearby beauty of Glen Lake and the little town of Glen Arbor. I just had to revisit the area of the Homestead and Leelanau where I spent some ten years earlier in the 1960's.
The clear blue water of Lake Michigan sending waves onto the beach is beautiful as the Crystal River winds through the forest and outlets at Lake Michigan. Wow, I just loved seeing it all again.
OK, where was I..... Saturday evening at 6:30 PM we all found our way to the Traverse City Golf and Country Club we had a prime rib dinner. Our very special guests. Mr. and Mrs. Velkoff came in at about 7 PM and they enjoyed visiting with the class of '57. Stephen Velkoff is 83 and his wife, Barbara is 82 and doing very well. And the stories they told about memories of past years -- it was great! Afterwards Dinan had arranged for music by the Jelly Roll Blues Band well into the evening. Other classmates found their way to the club main entrance where there was less noise, excuse me, loud music --and there Jones, Kasameyer, Funke, Sue Grant Wolter and Tom Stacey were reminiscing about Baron's football, old times, cars and ?.
Sunday morning after breakfast we all headed for Ogur's home on the Bay up on Old Mission Peninsula off M-37 for Bloody-Marys, soft drinks and coffee while still just enjoying the company of fellow classmates. After posing for a reunion picture on Ogur's front porch everyone got into their cars and drive about a mile to Brunch at the Peninsula Grill. which lasted until about One PM. Boy it was hard saying our farewell to everyone. I decided to stay at Bayshore that evening and travel home to north of Rochester the next day, Monday. Dinan did the same except he flew from TC to Metro to catch a flight to Massachusetts. I arrived home at 1:30 PM. I had seen only one deer on the Old Homestead Road in Glen Arbor only to drive up my driveway to find six deer were having their lunch in the yard awaiting my arrival.
One afternoon Jocelyn and I made a dash into TC for a quick coffee-break. We found a Starbuck’s Cafe at the Old Train Depot and just enjoyed talking. Later as we were leaving we saw the Dinner Train returning to TC depot.
Sunday evening I drove the bayshore trying to find a place for dinner. Not fancy, just a hamburg and hot drink. I found it at Day’s Inn Country Cafe on Munson Avenue there on the bay. Clean, quiet and a good mushroom burger.
Monday, I got a quick complimentary breakfast at the hotel and a second cup of hot coffee for the trip home and would you believe it stayed hot to luke-warm all the way home. It was great. I stopped at West Branch for a pit stop and exercise --four trips around the car.
It was great to see several new faces this year. There was Fred Boch, Tom Funke, Jim Jones, Bob Kasameyer, Larry Legros, Tom Stacey, and of course me - I failed to make the millennium reunion at Hilton Head, SC. At the last minute we received word that Tom Little could not come.-- Tom, we missed you.
Returning this year were the following: Gordon
Clark, Harley and Mary Davis, Dennis and Sally Dinan, Larry Donaldson,
Harry and Betsy Durbin, Jim and Sue Fuller, Ned and Amy Grant, Sue (Grant)
and Doug Wolter, Carl and Kathy Jechura, Doug Jocelyn, Jay and Elise Miller,
Bob and Ann Ogur, Doug and Dottie Pfaff, John and Jerry Risk, Cindy
(Scott) and Woody Morcott, Bob and Mary Treadway along with our guests
of honor, Mr. and Mrs. Velkoff. I think that is everyone, please forgive
me if I missed anyone.
What a pleasant and wonderful weekend I had with
all our classmates. Yes, everyone of you who did not come, --I missed seeing
you. Perhaps next time in 2007 for our fiftieth reunion.
The above comments are only the highlights of the weekend. I omitted so much due to space. Oh, we did not provide a reunion book this year. It is still in the making for release soon perhaps on CD-Rom to all classmates.More news on this later. There is still time for you to send in your comments for those of you who for some reason have not done so as of yet.
Write to us and above all else please stay in
touch and provide us with your current address, telephone number and email
address. Thanks. See you next time! With all cordial and warm wishes,

Richard…. Good recap of the reunion.
It was great fun all the more because of new faces and again more so due
to old faces that now felt more familiar and friendly. I am
happy you were able to come all the hard work you have put into holding
our class together and it shows. Thanks for it and for coming.
/ Sue.

NED GRANT, BHHS57 --October 2, 2002
To Dinan, I say well spoken...almost. To set the record straight, Bob
Ogur gets most of the credit for a delightful weekend, well planned and
perfectly executed. What credit isn't due Bob Ogur. goes to Bob Treadway.
Chairman Grant only said yea man! That sounds good to me. The other credits
are well stated and well deserved.
As for "Cheater Grant", I must protest. I didn't cheat..."brither"
Dinan just wasn't too swift in picking the proper number of attendees.
And though I technically won the Dalmore 21 year old, when I got the golden
liquor home,
there was but two or three fingers left...the rest drunk by me brother
Dinan.
Let the record stand and heartfelt thanks to all who helped and all who came. See you in 2007.
P.S. Harley: You better learn how to open your email! / Ned

ROBERT KASAMEYER, BHHS57 --September 30, 2002
Dinan mentions the things we were promised at
the reunion, but fails to mention the most important. What sold me on attending
was the opportunity of rubbing elbows -maybe more!- with Anna Kournikova.
The fact that I didn't remember this until some days after I got back must
mean I had a pretty good time. But I still would like to know what happened
to her. And who ,specifically, made that promise.

The reunion weekend was delightful, however, with so few in attendance
one could accomplish all the updating in one evening. I look forward to
your survey to try to find out why so many classmates declined to attend.
I can't believe that 70% of our class can't afford it or had such miserable
times in high school that they do not wish to relive them.
Is it true that Harley Davis is going to chair the 50th?

A tribute to our special guests during reunion weekend .... Mr. and Mrs. Velkoff |
BHHS57, the Reunion Committee and all our reunion attendees would like
to thank Mr. and Mrs. Velkoff for
taking your time to be our very special guests during Reunion 2002.
We enjoyed your company and hearing all
the stories you have of past memories of your teaching career at Bloomfield
Hills High School. We are also pleased to know that you even remember us
after all these years. Mr. Velkoff we wish you and your wife
Barbara all the best in the coming years. We wish you a safe journey
in your trips to Arizona and other locations
around our Country. We all still lead busy and active lives but we
shall always have a moment for our very
special guests. Keep us in your thoughts as we shall do the same for
you. / BHHS57

REUNION --a poem
Reunion
Every ten years, as summertime nears
An announcement arrives in the
mail,
A reunion is planned; it'll be
really grand;
Make plans to attend without fail.
I'll never forget the first time
we met
We tried so hard to impress,
We drove fancy cars, smoked big
cigars,
And wore our most elegant dress.
It was quite an affair,
the whole class was there,
It was held in a fancy hotel.
We wined, and we dined,
and we acted refined,
And every one thought it was swell.
The men all conversed
about who had been first
To achieve great fortune and fame.
Meanwhile, their spouses
described their fine houses
And how beautiful their children
became.
The homecoming queen,
who once had been lean,
Now weighed in at one-ninety six.
The jocks who were there
had lost all their hair,
And the cheerleaders could no longer
do kicks.
No one! had heard
about the class nerd
Who'd guided a spacecraft to the
moon,
Or poor little Jane,
who'd always been plain,
She married a shipping tycoon.
The boy we'd decreed
"most apt to succeed"
Was serving ten years in the pen.
While the one voted "least"
now was a priest.
Just shows you can be wrong now
and then.
They awarded a prize
to one of the guys
Who seemed to have aged the least.
Another was given
to the grad who had driven
The farthest to attend the feast.
They took a class picture,
a curious mixture
Of beehives, crew cuts and wide
ties.
Tall, short or skinny,
the style was the mini.
You never saw so many thighs.
At our next get together,
no one cared whether
They impressed their classmates
or not.
The mood was informal,
a whole lot more normal,
By this time we'd all gone to pot.
It was held out-of-doors,
down at the lake shores,
We ate hamburgers, coleslaw and
beans.
Then most of us lay around in the
shade,
In our comfortable T-shirts and
jeans.
By the fortieth year,
it was abundantly clear,
We were definitely over the hill.
Those who weren't dead
had to crawl out of bed,
And be home in time for their pill.
And now I can't wait,
they've set the date.
Our fiftieth is coming,
I'm told.
It should be a ball,
they've rented a hall
At the Shady Rest Home for the
old.
Repairs have been made
on my hearing aid,
My pacemakers been turned up on
high,
My wheelchair is oiled,
and my teeth have been boiled,
And I've bought a new wig and glass
eye.
I'm feeling! quite hearty,
and I'm ready to party;
I'm gonna dance until dawns early
light.
It'll be lots of fun, I just hope
that there's one
Other person who can make it that
night.

A FINAL THOUGHT OR TWO.....
Boy, talk about a fun reunion.....Thanks to the Reunion Committee.
It was great to see everyone. Yet it would
have been better to see even more of the class there. At least those
of you in Michigan. There must be at least ten of you living in northern
Michigan that could have made the quick trip to Traverse. We really missed
all who did not attend this year. Ned even mentioned the fact as we remembered
the whole class of '57,
Well perhaps next time --2007!
Thanks again for everyone's time and effort to be at Reunion
